George H. and Anna K. Casper Trust
Providing Low Interest Loans to Students Entering College
Established in 1973 by Bro. George H. and Anna Casper, the program was developed to provide low interest loans to high school students in need of financial assistance for college.
Bro. George H. Casper, a member of Canton Lodge No. 60, F. & A. M., was in the construction business in Canton and also had successful real estate investments in this area.
For years the Trust was administered by Huntington Financial Group and The Stark Community Foundation who held the trust. Because of irregular repayments by some graduated students, the trust was frozen in early 2011 for restructuring.
Surveying the possibilities of changing the trust to a grant, it was discovered that the Casper family had no intentions of this ever happening when the trust was first established. At this point in time Huntington Financial Group chose not to be the financial loan agent longer because of difficulties with the collection of these very low cost loans.
Stark Community Foundation, who had already petitioned the Stark County Probate Court to restructure the trust, was faced with there being no one to administer the loans to the students, they not having the facilities to handle this task.
A court appointed mediator approached Canton Student Loan Foundation to help with the trust. They, having no means to loan post-graduate students with financial assistance, agreed to take on the task of the exclusive administration, loaning, interviewing and collection of loans to potential graduate students.
This agreement was so ordered by Stark County Probate Court, Judge Dixie Park, early in 2013. Logistics were ironed out and Canton Student Loan Foundation had the ball in their court.
Requirements for loan consideration are:
- Student must have a 3.0 GPA or above
- Should be a resident of Stark County
- Exhibit a need for financial assistance
- Should be applying for a post-graduate loan and be available for a short interview with the Canton Student Loan Foundation Committee.
Students are required to repay these loans according to required contracts with the Canton Student Loan Foundation and are subject to standard loan procedure. Checks are issued from Canton Student Loan Foundation and are drawn from the Casper Student Loan Trust.
The Casper Student Loan Advisory Committee will review all applications and make final approval for Casper funds to be loaned. As Masons, we are proud of our involvement in the community and to have the opportunity to further the education of tomorrow's leaders.
