On Wednesday evening, January 28, 2008, Lathrop
Lodge #676 ceased it's work and merged with Canton Lodge #60.
On March 18, 1921,
Masons not affiliated with either of the two existing Canton Blue Lodges
met to take preliminary action to form the third Blue Lodge in Canton. At
that meeting, 137 resident Masons signed a petition for a dispensation and
elected the following officers: Lowell M. Harter, Worshipful Master; David
D. Jones, Senior Warden; Charles E. Burd, Junior Warden; Effio B. Proctor,
Treasurer; George C. Mast, Secretary; Jacob D. Zavita, Senior Deacon;
Thomas D. Magee, Junior Deacon; John N. Paterson, Tyler. Trustees elected:
John W. McGiashan, three years; W.H. Longsworth, two years; W.S. King, one
year. Later, the Worshipful Master appointed the following: Harry E.
Johnson, Chaplain; Charles L. Prince, Senior Steward, and Fred W. Leist,
Junior Steward.
A committee appointed
to select a name for the new lodge unanimously decided on Lathrop Lodge as
a tribute to James W. Lathrop who came to Canton from Connecticut in 1816
at the age of 25 to practice law. Brother Lathrop was instrumental in the
town incorporation and became its first president; established the first
library, and the first fire department; served as attorney for the first
bank in Canton, and was elected to the office of County Auditor. He was
later elected to the State Legislature in 1824 through 1828, during which
time he became a leading proponent of the public school system, as we know
it today. His speeches in the House earned him the title, "Father of
the Public School System in Ohio." Canton’s Lathrop School was
named in his honor. Brother Lathrop was a Charter Member of Canton Lodge
No. 60, its first Secretary and second Worshipful Master. He died after a
sudden illness in the winter of 1828.
The first meeting under
dispensation was held June 14, 1921, with 129 present. The Lodge held
thirteen Stated and Special Meetings under dispensation and raised seven
members to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. The last Stated Meeting
under dispensation was held October 11, 1921, and the Charter was issued
October 20, 1921 at the Grand Lodge Communication in Cleveland. The list
of 143 Charter Members was unique in that it consisted of brethren from
ten states as well as the countries of England, Scotland, and Canada. On
Wednesday evening, November 9, 1921, Lathrop Lodge No. 676 was
consecrated, its officers installed and the Lodge constituted.
Lathrop Lodge’s first
Inspection was May 2, 1922; first Family Night, April 18, 1923; first
meeting in our present Temple March 23, 1926; first Past Masters’ Night
January 18, 1927; first open Installation December 4, 1928, and the first
Fish Fry at Sippo Lake on June 29, 1938.
The Lodge observed its
Silver Anniversary October 1946 and its Golden Anniversary October 12,
1971.
